A PLACE IN THE SUN
The number of British people buying second homes abroad has risen dramatically over the last ten years. The majority of these people are retired, or have taken early retirement. A small number of people work in the destination country and there are those who actually commute regularly from the UK. One city analyst, for example, spends Monday to Thursday at work in London, and the weekends in Barcelona, where his family live all the time.
Some people sell their UK property to finance the purchase of a home abroad, but a large number of people keep their UK residence and divide their time between the two places.
Popular destinations include France, Italy and Spain. A new trend has recently appeared, following the fall in the cost of air travel. People are now buying homes in Canada and the Eastern Mediterranean region. The common factor, however, is the climate. Almost everyone who responded to a recent survey agreed that they wanted to live in a warmer and sunnier place.
Every year, a number of people who have moved abroad decide to return to the UK. The reasons vary and include health problems, family and simple homesickness.
